The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert on tainted weight loss pills in December 2008 of 28 diet pills and as of January 2009 that list has expanded to a staggering 41.
"These tainted weight loss products pose a great risk to public health because they contain undeclared ingredients and, in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed their maximum recommended dosages,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA. “Consumers have no way of knowing that these products contain powerful drugs that could cause serious health consequences. Therefore FDA is taking this action to protect the health of the American public."You can see the full article at FDA news for the full list of products.
People need to be aware that there are many shady companies out there peddling lose weight quick schemes. Anytime you want to put a pill in your body you should know what you are taking. The supplement industry is not as regulated as the drug industry. So if you see a commercial with some fancy marketing be sure to do your homework before buying.
